Obstruction and learning strategies of English listening

A research for facts:
As an English teacher, I find some students have difficulty in listening. In order to find out the obstruction and learning strategies, I made a research into my students. The following is what they think about English listening:
Student A: I think listening is difficult for me , I don’t understand what the speaker say at all. I don’t know how to improve it.
Student B: Listening is a little difficult for me. Sometimes I can grasp what the speakers mean. But sometimes, I can’t understand what they say.
Student C: I have difficulty in listening. The teacher said we should remember more and more words. And listen every day. Then we shall improve it.
Student D: I think listening is easy. I like it.
I investigated 50 students. The following form is the scale:
Student A 15 persons 30%
Student B 15 persons 30%
Student C 15 persons 30%
Student D 5 persons 10%
This is the result of the research. Most of the students think listening is hard for them. I must find a good way to change this situation. This passage is what I think about this problem. I hope the students can benefit from it.
Ⅰ Introduction
listening understanding is the course of comprehending is to emphasize listeners to remember all the information by analyzing pronunciation, Sallying the meaning and grasping vocabulary. Is to put the content in the direct and greater cultural background to understand. Is a mutual course of language knowledge and mental activities.
Ⅱ The obstruction facts in listening understanding.
1.1 Wrong pronunciation is one of the reasons controlling the students’ listening
The level of students’ pronunciation control the level of listening understanding. Students always can’t pronounce correctly because of their native language. They are not fit to continuous and omitted sentences. They can’t understand the meaning of accent and the changing intonation. So it will occurs that they listen it wrongly but write it correctly. Teacher should correct and improve the students’ pronunciation.
1.2 The lack of vocabulary is a second factor of preventing listening.
The very lack of vocabulary is the basic reason for poor listening. Vocabulary is the base of language and the base of understanding. If you are unfamiliar with words and idioms, The improvement will be like the water without spring. The forest without wood. All the ways. Will be useless.
So, in order to solve this problem, I asked students to remember more words. After a long time, the standard of listening improved a lot.
1.3 The unfamiliar grammar is the third reason of poor listening.
English is a kind of spelling words. Not only pronunciation but also making sentences is different from Chinese. Analysis grammar helps to do well in reading comprehension. And also helps to listen well.
If the students are rich in grammar. They can easily analysis the language materials . They can avoid some simple grammar mistakes and grasp the main idea more quickly and correctly during the course of listening.
Ⅲ The strategies of improving listening
1 connecting careful and general listening choose suitable material
Careful listening is to listen every word. every sentence. And every paragraph clearly. The purpose is to practice the base of listening differ the different pronunciations. Usual words and common sentences and to grasp the same and different characters in listening style.
The course of general listening is careless and rough, The purpose is only to understand the main ides and develop the result of careful listening.
2 listening and speaking help with each other
The ability of listening and speaking is mutual. At the beginning. Students should imitate repeat and correct pronunciation. Then bring up the feeling of language.
The practice of speaking includes imitating reading. Reciting and talking to oneself.
Speaking is the base of listening. If one speaks well. His listening is no wonder perfect
Ⅳ conclusion
This passage talks about how to improve the level of listening, in a word. Teachers and students should know that the improvement of listening must base on the student’s comprehensive level. So . if you want to improve listening, you must listen more and more remember more and more words and read more and more materials.
