[摘要] turkey’s modernization endeavor is irreversible, in my view, with or without the eu accession. the prospect of eu membership has no doubt played a constructive role in facilitating institutional and economic development in turkey. the country’s modernization enterprise was originally put on track over two centuries ago during the ottoman reign, and dramatically pushed forward by kemal ataturk in the early days of the republic.
they cannot look out far.
they cannot look in deep.
