METHODS: A normal pelvis from an adult male subject was scanned by CT and the images of every crosssection were obtained. A pelvic model including both threedimensional pelvic muscle and acetabular contact forces during standard gait was constructed with PATRAN 2005R2 software. RESULTS: The constructed 3D finite element pelvic model clearly reflected the real pelvic anatomy and biomechanical behavior, especially the muscle force and hip contact force. The model was divided into 113 028 nodes and 137 524 units. CONCLUSION: The construction of 3D finite element pelvic model provides basic data which are critical for accurately modeling either normal loads or stresses and strains, or the effects of abnormal conditions.
