abstract: the paper differentiates two approaches to translation studies, the empirical and the transcendental, and argues for the latter as the way to theorizing translation. theory involves four necessary conditions. the author divides these conditions into two main groups – linguistic and extra-linguistic – and argues that the linguistic conditions are logically prior to the extra-linguistic conditions. in the light of modern linguistics, the linguistic condition or the structure is a priori and refers to the paradigmatic relations of linguistic signs. the possibility/impossibility of the transformation of one linguistic paradigm into another shapes the problematic of translatability/untranslatability. a case study of the poem “jing ye si” reinforces the theoretical argument with untranslatability as its focus.
